The Traditional Gin and Tonic Cocktail is quick and easy, and so refreshing! It is my favorite cocktail, and there are so many ways to make it and jazz it up.
Also referred as a “G&T” this popular drink is enjoyed all over the world. And it has quite the interesting history!
Traditional Gin and Tonic Cocktail
The Gin and Tonic Cocktail has a very interesting history! Originally created in the 18th century by a Scottish doctor and some British officers. It was found that quinine could cure malaria, however the flavor was not palatable. But thanks to the officer’s Gin rations, this drink was created to find a more palatable way to drink the quinine.
However, tonic (the quinine part of a G&T) does not have the same amounts of malaria fighting quinine any longer. So just enjoy this cocktail and don’t expect it to cure anything.
Gin and Tonic Garnishes
Since it’s been around for so long, people have gotten very creative with gin and tonic garnishes! Here are a few favorites, of course a lime wedge or wheel is traditional, but what’s not to love about these add-ins?!
- Lime wedge or wheel
- Grapefruit wedge
- Orange peel or ring
- Blood orange ring
- Rosemary sprig
- Thyme sprig
- Mint sprig
- Cucumber ring or ribbon
- Sliced ginger
- Mashed berries or even make the G&T poured over sorbet!

This traditional cocktail is crisp and delicious! It is my favorite “go to” drink, and it’s easy (and less expensive) to make it at home, instead of going to a bar.
