This popular cocktail packs a punch, even in it’s lightened state. And I have included some fun “new” garnishes to really make this drink impressive.

Low Calorie Old Fashioned Drink

I cut the amount of bourbon or whiskey down just a little bit in the efforts to get this recipe as close to 100 calories as possible. I took it from 2 ounces to 1.5 ounces. But if you want the full strength, it will only increase the drink by 36 calories.

I also swapped out the sugar, for an all-natural zero calorie simple syrup. This helps bring the cocktail from the original 226 calories, down to just 109 calories.

Garnishes for a Low Calorie Old Fashioned Cocktail

The traditional old fashioned will have just the orange peel twist garnish (maybe a cherry depending on who you ask). And though the orange twist is important for the flavor of the drink, you can swap out the Angostura bitters for orange bitters and skip the orange peel all together.

  • Orange Twist
  • Cocktail cherry
  • Sprig of thyme
  • Orange wedge

This Low Calorie Old Fashioned does take a slight cut on the amount of booze, but only a little bit. I wanted to get this recipe as close to just 100 calories as possible. But if you did want the traditional 2 oz of bourbon or whiskey the calories will be 145 calories.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon zero calorie simple syrup

  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters

  • 1 teaspoon water

  • 1.5 ounces whiskey or bourbon

  • Orange peel twist

  • Garnish:
  • Cocktail cherry

Directions

  • Add the all natural zero calorie simple syrup, bitters and water into a rocks glass. Stir together.
  • Fill the glass with large ice cubes, and add the whiskey.
  • Squeeze the orange peal over the glass to extract oil, roll the outer part of the orange peal around the rim of the glass, then drop in.
  • Garnish with a cherry and serve.
